Given the bank collapses, a pause in rates is likely but not guaranteed. The Fed is in a tough situation. It has to prevent a contagion, while at the same time reining in the still-high inflationary expectations. If they focus on the former, the latter will be more difficult to address in the coming weeks/months, because, again, expectations. If they focus on the latter, we'll be facing a greater risk of more bank failures. For now, I expect a rate hike of 0-25 basis points, but that may change. It all depends what happens between now and the next week's FOMC meeting. Btw, separately but relatedly, a WSJ article likened the monetary tightening to getting catchup out of a glass bottle: you smack it several times and nothing happens, and then finally you end up with too much catchup. The macro picture is indeed getting more bearish. I'm not team "soft landing". Best, Kana Nur-tegin
